Oklahoma Academic Standard 4. The student will identify basic economic concepts.

Objective 4.4 Describe how various school personnel provide needed services.

In a Nutshell

Another major economic concept- the idea that labor involves not only the making of products or growing of food crops, but can take the form of services that one person provides for another. Students can begin to develop an understanding of the differences between goods and services by identifying individuals around their school and community who work to help others, such as custodians, teachers, cafeteria workers, etc.

Teacher Action

Student Action

  • Assist students to identify necessary goods and services that school workers provide.

  • Facilitate students to draw, label, or dictate a narrative regarding the services school personnel provide for students.

  • Organize information about the many services provided by school workers, using simple graphic organizers with guidance and support.

Key Concepts

Misconceptions

  • workers, services, jobs, responsibilities
  • Most students will recognize different workers in the school community but may not consider how essential their roles and responsibilities are to the well-being of the community.
