Teacher Action

Student Action

  • Provide opportunities for students to examine and draw conclusions regarding geographic information about the students’ own community.

  • Ask and answer geographic questions using geographic information and the application of cardinal directions about specific locations on a map.

Key Concepts

  • purpose and use of cardinal directions of north, south, east and west

  • basic map-reading skills using cardinal directions

  • description of place location and routes using cardinal directions

  • Some students' families may rely heavily on GPS to navigate new areas, therefore, using actual map skills and understanding concepts such as cardinal directions, may be unfamiliar.
