It is important for students to differentiate between the physical and economic characteristics of urban versus rural communities in order to understand the benefits and challenges of living in each type of region. Students may also explore basic settlement patterns of their own communities and surrounding environments, identifying why some people move from rural or urban areas, or vice versa.
