Oklahoma Academic Standard 3.  The student will analyze the significant events and historic personalities contributing to the development of the state of Oklahoma.

Objective 3.5 Describe early expeditions into Oklahoma such as those of Coronado, Washington Irving, and George Catlin.

In a Nutshell

This objective focuses on the major historic European and American expeditions and explorations into present-day Oklahoma, including the impact these expeditions had on the development of the state, its native inhabitants, and its natural environments. Students should explore the historical turning points related to contact between Europeans, Americans, and indigenous people, including an examination of the motives for explorations into present-day Oklahoma.

Teacher Action

Student Action

  • Assist students to identify the author and date of a primary source using information found within the source itself. using excerpts from historic documents of early exploration.

  • Provide opportunities for students to generate possible reasons for an event or development in the past, including motivations for early explorations and expeditions into Oklahoma.

  • Make connections between compelling and supporting questions which help answer an essential social studies question, such as "What is the purpose and value of exploring new lands?"

  • Explain and give examples of how individuals and groups have shaped significant historical changes in the community and state.

Key Concepts

Misconceptions

  • Spanish motivation for explorations, including a search for valuable minerals and the acquisition of territory to expand the wealth of the Spanish crown

  • American motivation for exploration, including study of the environment and evaluation of the lands for future human settlements

  • historic personalities are not limited to Coronado, Irving, and Catlin; suggestions include LeHarpe's encounters with indigenous people and the impact of Stephen Long's expedition

  • Some students may mistakenly perceive early explorations by Europeans and Americans as having identical motivations.

  • Young students find difficulty in understanding long-term effects of an event, focusing on merely immediate impact.
