Oklahoma Academic Standard 2. The student will analyze the physical systems of the major regions of the Western Hemisphere.

Objectives: 

6.2.3  Describe the predominant natural resources found in each region.

6.2.4  Describe the relationship and summarize the impact of the distribution of major renewable and nonrenewable resources on each region. 

In a Nutshell

It is important for students to realize that with a population of over seven billion, the Earth’s people must be wise about resource use. It is imperative that students are aware of the differences between renewable and nonrenewable resources, as well as where available resources are located. Students must also be able to analyze the patterns of distribution for resources, including implications of abundance and scarcity.

  • Provide frequent opportunities for students to develop and ask geographic questions which help to promote mental mapping skills related to the distribution of renewable and nonrenewable resources in the Western Hemisphere.

  • Assist students in acquiring, organizing, and analyzing multiple sources of information (maps, graphs, and charts) to analyze data as it pertains to the distribution of renewable and nonrenewable resources in the Western Hemisphere. 

  • Use multiple mapping techniques and data visuals to create and analyze spatial patterns of environmental and cultural characteristics to analyze the availability of scarce resources.

  • Make connections between spatial patterns of physical and human features of the Earth’s surface by interpreting satellite images and using geographic technology related to the distribution of natural resources.
