Oklahoma Academic Standard 3. The student will identify the characteristics, distribution, and demographic patterns of human populations and systems of the Western Hemisphere.

Objectives:

6.3.1  Identify on a political map the major countries and population centers of each region.

6.3.3  Analyze the impact of geography on population distribution, growth, and change, applying  geographic concepts of population density, the availability of resources.

In a Nutshell

The origins and growth of human settlements have been and continue to be affected by the relative location of needed resources. For students to understand spatial distribution of population centers on Earth they must understand cause-effect relationships involving the multitude of factors which impact patterns of settlement.

Teacher Action

Student Action

  • Assist students in using primary and secondary sources to create and annotate maps of various regions.

  • Provide multiple opportunities for students to use maps to analyze spatial patterns of environmental and cultural characteristics of various regions.

  • Gather information from  maps, cartograms, and population pyramids to analyze and hypothesize how overpopulation can manifest itself in various population centers over periods of time.

  • Examine geographic data to distinguish between long-term causes and triggering events on settlement patterns and movement.

Key Concepts

Misconceptions

  • urban, rural, suburban, metropolitan, megalopolis

  • total population, population growth, population density, settlement patterns, overpopulation, crude birth rate, crude death rate, age-sex structure

  • population data graphs, including bar, line, and population pyramids

  • demographics, unsustainable, carrying capacity

  • Many students have limited understanding of the factors which impact settlement patterns, such as the relationship of metropolitan areas to natural resources or transportation hubs.

  • Most students will have limited prior knowledge of demographic statistics and what they can reveal about a nation's current challenges, as well as future conditions.
