Oklahoma Academic Standard 5. The student will compare common physical and human characteristics of regions which create identity or uniqueness and influence people’s perceptions of the Western Hemisphere.

Objective 6.5.5  Analyze reasons for conflict and cooperation among and between groups, societies, nations, and regions.

In a Nutshell

It is important for students to understand that nations often collaborate to solve mutual problems and that conflict arises when those issues cannot be resolved. The motivations and conditions which lead to action, or the lack thereof, can help students better understand the often complicated relationships among countries or groups of people.

Teacher Action

  • Assist students to examine the origins, purposes and impact of constitutions, laws, treaties, and international agreements.

  • Distinguish between long-term causes and triggering events of contemporary conflicts that shape regions.

  • Analyze the role that perspectives, civic virtues, and democratic principles play when citizens address issues or problems.

  • Evaluate textual evidence related to contemporary examples of conflict and cooperation in order to determine whether claims are substantiated or unsubstantiated.

Key Concepts

Misconceptions

  • purposes and types of alliances and international organizations, including political, military (mutual defense), economic, and humanitarian

  • goals and practices of international aid organizations and non-governmental organizations

  • examples of alliances and international organizations, including the United Nations, Red Cross, NAFTA (USMCA), North Atlantic Treaty Organization

  • Students may be under the impression that conflict always denotes a physical altercation between countries. It should be addressed that conflict can often manifest itself in economic or diplomatic arenas, such as trade restrictions, increased tariffs, immigration laws, etc.
