	Sample Unit Progression	This  course progression provides a sample vision for learning  that engages in meaningful, connected social studies. Unit samples offer examples of collaborative and inquiry-based lesson ideas, as well as formative assessments.
	Engagement Strategies	Suggested instructional strategies to support the Social Studies Practices, develop critical thinking, and engage students in collaborative inquiry.

In the sixth grade, student learning is focused on the discipline of geography- the study of spatial patterns of the human and physical characteristics of the world and its peoples.

Students will use geographic knowledge as a tool for understanding the concepts of economics and the impact of recent history on contemporary events. Students will also explore how spatial patterns form, change over time, and relate to one another, using examples from the Western Hemisphere. For practical purposes, the Western Hemisphere is identified as the areas of North America, South America, and the Caribbean.
