Social Studies Professional Development Modules

The Oklahoma State Department of Education has developed the following professional development modules to assist educators across the state with the implementation of the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Social Studies in a manner that will provide effective and engaging instruction and learning for all students.

The modules may be used by communities of practice or individual educators seeking to better understand the learning standards and practices. 

Each module includes a presentation of key concepts, principles, and ideas related to the topic, relevant research, collaborative activities, and pre/post assessments of learning.
A step-by-step facilitator's guide also accompanies each module to assist meaningful experiences toward the professional growth of social studies educators.

Leveraging the Curriculum Frameworks to Support Classroom Instruction

Description: 

Participants will explore and consider the resources available through the Curriculum Frameworks which accompany, clarify, and enhance the Oklahoma State Academic Standards for Social Studies.

Facilitator's Guide

Session Goals: 

  • To provide an in-depth review of the purpose and elements of the Frameworks, including the Objective Analysis, examining how both content and practices have been addressed through suggested Teacher and Student Actions.

  • To examine Key Concepts of content necessary for mastery of state standards and the role of Misconceptions as valuable insight for classroom teachers.

  • To provide an opportunity for participants to explore Instructional Resources, which include Lesson Ideas, Inquiry Tasks, Primary and Secondary Sources correlated to grade levels and subjects.

  • To examine samples of Unit Progressions recommended by the Frameworks, including the goal and use of inquiry to guide student learning.

  • To review samples of different types of Formative Assessments provided by the Frameworks and provide participants the opportunity to consider the purpose of assessing learning prior to and during instruction.

Understanding the Oklahoma Academic Practice Standards for Social Studies

Description:

Participants will examine the newest feature of the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Social Studies- the Social Studies Practices- and analyze the principles of Inquiry-Based Learning as the foundation for the Practices.

Session Goals:

  • To provide background related to the development of the Social Studies Practice standards by introducing participants to the concept of Inquiry Teaching and Learning and its influence on the five Social Studies Practices.

  • To offer an opportunity to consider examples of the Practices at various grade levels and courses in order to understand the design of the Practices as an intentional progression of rigorous critical thinking, reading, and writing.

  • To explore the Framework’s collection of suggested instructional strategies for implementing the Social Studies Practices.

  • To provide an opportunity for participants to how they might begin to implement the Social Studies Standards and Practices in their own classrooms.

Exploring the Inquiry Arc of Social Studies 

Description: Participants will consider how the purposeful use of the Inquiry Arc can enhance mastery of the Social Studies Practices, as well as engage all learners in content understanding.

Session Goals:

  • To provide background to the concept of the Inquiry Arc as a for structured, student-centered learning experience based on constructivist theory. 

  • To explore the concept of Essential Questions in order to focus student learning within the structure of the Inquiry Arc.

  • To review the value of using primary sources of evidence as essential to the effective use of the Inquiry Arc in Social Studies.

  • To consider the advantages of student engagement in meaningful communication, both written and verbal, as essential to the Inquiry Arc.

  • To provide participants to create a sample Inquiry Arc lesson, using a template and provided sets of primary sources related to common themes and topics in Social Studies. 

The Inquiry Arc of Social Studies: Instructional Strategies That Work

Description: Participants will explore and experience suggested instructional strategies which enhance inquiry learning and implementation of the Social Studies Practices through use of the Inquiry Arc.

Session Goals:

  • To model and engage participants in using selected research-based strategies for effectively dissecting written forms of primary source evidence.

  • To consider and compare suggested instructional strategies which enhance the analysis of visual forms of primary source evidence.

  • To introduce participants to engaging and authentic strategies which build both verbal and written communication skills within the structure of the Inquiry Arc.

  • To provide an opportunity for participants to examine an online repository of recommended instructional strategies to assist with the implementation of the Oklahoma Social Studies Practice Standards. 

Using Best Questions in Social Studies

Description: Participants will consider the potential of using different types of questions in the social studies classroom as a means to provide focus for learning, cohesion across units of study or coursework, and assure relevant purposes for student-centered inquiries.

Session Goals:

  • To review current practices related to the use of questions in the social studies classroom, considering commonly understood definitions and characteristics of the major types of questions recommended by the Oklahoma Practice Standards for Social Studies.

  • To analyze what constitutes Driving Questions versus Essential Question by providing several opportunities to consider samples, apply criteria, and analyze the potential of Essential Questions, using examples from multiple grades and courses of study.

  • To examine the nature and role of Supporting Questions as they relate to both Essential Questions and specific content knowledge required by the Oklahoma Academic Standards.

  • To explore suggested Essential and Supporting Questions from suggested Unit Progressions featured in the Oklahoma Curriculum Frameworks for Social Studies.

  •  To assist planning for the use of different types of questions by offering guidelines for developing engaging and meaningful Essential and Supporting Questions.

Exploring Formative Assessment Ideas for Social Studies

Description: Participants will examine the purposes for different types of assessments of student learning, focusing on the advantages of frequent, varied, and challenging formative assessments for both teachers and students.

Session Goals:

  • To provide an opportunity to reflect on current understandings of how and why different types of assessments are used in social studies.

  • To engage in an in-depth analysis of the benefits of measuring student progress both prior to and during instruction.

  • To offer suggestions for designing formative assessments, featuring six elements shared by effective formative assessments.

  • To review the Oklahoma Curriculum Frameworks’ collection of sample formative assessments and consider the criteria used by Oklahoma educators when developing the samples.

Success with Simulations in Social Studies 

Description: Participants will explore the instructional principles for using simulations, role-playing, and authentic recreations in social studies, as well as consider challenges in structuring such learning experiences to assure appropriate, meaningful learning experiences.

  • To examine the potential of role-playing instructional strategies in Social Studies.

  • To identify the criteria that defines effective and engaging simulations.

  • To consider best practices for using simulations so that students benefit in the most positive and productive manner.

  • To review examples of authentic and innovative simulations, as provided in the Social Studies Curriculum Frameworks. 

  • To consider topics in social studies in which the use of simulations should be avoided.
